Helena Hatten

Vice President

Helena Hatten has been an influential member of the Great Lakes Beadworkers Guild (GLBG) since she joined in 1998. Currently serving as the Vice President, Helena's passion for beading began during her college days in Ann Arbor when she admired a necklace at a bead store and was encouraged to try making it herself. This inspiration sparked a lifelong love for beading, and she has been honing her craft for nearly 50 years.

Born and raised in Detroit, MI, Helena has lived most of her life in Livonia. Her journey with the GLBG began when she saw an ad for the Bead Bonanza in the Free Press and attended the event. There, she received information about the guild and soon became a member. Since then, Helena has been an active participant, attending meetings, in-person classes, and various guild events.

Helena's beading skills have been significantly enhanced by learning from numerous talented instructors. She has taken multiple classes with renowned artists such as Dallas Lovett, Lisa Niven-Kelly, Sherry Serafini, and Erin Simonetti. Helena believes in the value of continuous learning and encourages others to take advantage of both in-person and online classes to improve their skills.

In addition to beading, Helena enjoys teaching others. She has shared her expertise in wire work and beading at the guild, local bead stores, Armstrong Tool and Supply, Fritz and Friends, and her church. Her dedication to teaching has helped many aspiring beaders develop their skills.

Helena's favorite part of being a member of the GLBG is the opportunity to connect with other creative individuals. She values the friendships she has formed through the guild and appreciates the chance to learn new jewelry-making techniques and explore various forms of beading. She particularly enjoys the camaraderie and support of her Thursday group of friends, who continue to inspire and motivate her.

Outside of beading, Helena is a multifaceted individual with a range of interests. She is a lampwork artist, creating beautiful glass beads, and enjoys bible journaling, singing in two choirs, and volunteering at the Finnish Center in Farmington and her church. Helena is also a proud grandmother to three adorable grandchildren.

One surprising fact about Helena is that she is planning a mission trip to South Africa in April 2024. This adventurous spirit and dedication to helping others reflect her commitment to making a positive impact in the world.

Helena credits the GLBG with significantly enriching her life, providing her with opportunities to learn new skills, meet diverse people, and pursue her passion for beading. She encourages current and future members to get involved, attend meetings, and actively participate in the guild's activities to fully experience the benefits of this vibrant community.

Married to her supportive husband Jesse for over 52 years, Helena has raised two wonderful children who are now great parents themselves. Helena's journey with the GLBG continues to inspire and influence many within the beading community, and she remains dedicated to fostering creativity and learning among its members.
